Roncesvalles & Zubiri

I woke up in Roncesvalles, a medieval abbey that hosts the grave of the last king of Navarra, Sancho el Grande and also the chains which are pictured in the coat of arms of Navarra: The chains belonged to a moorish prince who used it to chain his soldiers around his war tent, so that they could not run away but had to defend the prince to their death. King Sancho defeated them in a famous battle and now the chains are here in the chapel next to his tomb.

With sun and landscape covered in white, I start to walk to Zubiri and its Rabies Bridge: Legend wants that if you walk your pet three times across it, the animal will be cured of rabies.

Weather continues to be surprisingly cold for this time of the year. A farmer (wearing a red apron fron Banco Santander) tells me he had not seen such a cold April for the last 25 years and quotes an old saying "snow and water in April will bring wealth to everyone!"
